Pleural mesothelioma patients who underwent lung-sparing surgery in combination with photodynamic therapy (PDT) showed superior overall survival than patients treated with conventional therapy using extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) (en bloc or the removal of the lungs and surrounding tissue) with PDT , suggests new research from the Raymond and Ruth Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The research is published in the June 2011 issue of Annals of Thoracic Surgery.
"Unlike the lungs of patients who received traditional sacrificing surgery for mesothelioma, patients in our study who underwent lung sparing surgery and photodynamic therapy, light-based cancer treatment, has undergone a remarkable degree the length of overall survival. The survival of the average average for patients has not reached more than two years when the results were analyzed. That's unusual in this field, especially when the majority of those patients who were older and had advanced cancer, "said Joseph Friedberg, MD, co-director of Penn and Program pleural mesothelioma and the Doctor thoracic surgeon who performed the operation cited in the study. "In addition to overall survival statistics, the difference between having and not having lungs, either with respect to the risks of surgery and the ability to enjoy a normal life after surgery, it is important for these patients."
Mesothelioma is one of the most aggressive and lethal of cancers and is usually caused by exposure to asbestos. Exposure to asbestos is usually precedes the development of cancer by anywhere from 10-50 years, but after that happened, the average survival following diagnosis is often only 9-12 months.
Although mesothelioma can occur in other locations such as the abdomen, pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of the disease and accounts for about 70 percent of cases. This form originated in the pleura - the membrane that surrounds the lungs and lining the chest - which begins as a microscopic sheet of malignant cells that line the inside of the chest and can grow to several inches thick. Layer and surrounding properties is not possible to remove the cancer with surgery alone. As a result, the conventional approach to treatment based operations involve radical surgery that included removing the lungs, in combination with chemotherapy and radiation throughout the breast. Even with aggressive treatment, the disease will recur in almost all patients.
The current study has two objectives. The first is to determine whether using a novel combination of PDT and surgery will allow less extensive surgical procedure to be used in lieu of the EPP. The second is to determine whether, based on previous research from Penn with PDT, the treatment will have a positive effect on survival for patients.
Unlike radiation, which passes through the body, PDT therapy is used in this study only penetrate a short distance that allows the lungs to be maintained. PDT treatment aims to eradicate the remaining microscopic disease trigger the patient's immune system to help fight cancer. Penn is one of only two centers in the world where PDT is used to treat pleural mesothelioma.
In the study, 28 patients (19 men, 9 women) underwent surgical resection plus PDT for pleural mesothelioma. Patients aged 27-81 years. All patients seen in a multidisciplinary setting and educated about the spectrum of available treatment options, including surgical intervention and its status is currently under study. Of the study group, 14 patients treated by extrapleural pneumonectomy modified (MEPP) and 14 by radical pleurectomy (RP) and intraoperative PDT. Twenty-two of 28 patients also received chemotherapy.

Researchers report aspects of mesothelioma survival rate
Mesothelioma survival rate- November 5, 2010 reported the journal of Thoracic Oncology a study from University of Rochester researchers looking after key factors associated with longer life expectancy of patients with mesothelioma. Over decades of case studies, researchers found several factors relating to life expectancy and survival rates of mesothelioma victims. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer with no known cure. Aggressive Mesothelioma survival rate treatments include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and rehabilitative therapies. A combination of treatments is typical of mesothelioma cases. Select however many mesothelioma patients, palliative treatment but as the fight against cancer directly. Palliative care focuses on pain management and quality of life.
Mesothelioma Cancer is specific to the lining of the lungs and other abdominal cavities. Usually associated with the toxic chemical asbestos, can begin with mesothelioma develop after asbestos fibers are inhaled. These fibers begin a mutation growth and results in the spread of irregularly patterned tumors.
Development times for Mesothelioma survival rate are characteristically long. Not until decades after exposure to asbestos show often patients signs or symptoms. Many mesothelioma patients have no idea that they were exposed to the toxic fibers, until she was diagnosed with mesothelioma, and the symptoms are easy as pneumonia or other treatable respiratory diseases. These factors make it difficult to recognize mesothelioma early. The study by University of Rochester was diagnosed with mesothelioma cases 9,701 from 1973 to 2006. Drop proved results as survival rates dramatically from the original diagnosis expanded. Survival rates were 55% after six months, 33% after one year and 5% after five years. Detection in Mesothelioma survival rate, positive factors were varied. Longer life expectancy had female patients and patients in recent years. Tumor grade and histology also played a role in the survival rates with lower tumor grade and Epithelioid histology (a more common structure of mesothelioma cells) is associated with higher survival rates. Cancer-direct surgery and Radiotherapies demonstrated even greater impact on patient's potential for a longer life have. The Department of radiation oncology at the James p. Wilmot Cancer Center University of Rochester is one of the leading research institutes of the country in which cancer and radiation.

Survival rate of Cancer mesothelioma in its final stages
Treatment options for patients are decided on the basis of case by case and depend on the stage of the Mesothelioma. Similarly, the survival rate of the disease is also dependent on its stage of development and reduced significantly in the final stages. Stage refers to the extent of the development of cancer in patients and is characterized by the type of tumor and the extent to which it has spread throughout the body. To the knowledge of the different stages, mesothelioma specialists are able to decide on a treatment plan and identify clinical trials for them. The type or the treatment also depends on the reason for the development of cancer, the type of tumor, its propensity to the invasion of nearby of the organs and tissues as well as the distance spread or metastatic in other parts of the body. The Brigham system is the latest form of the intermediate system used in the diagnosis of mesothelioma and is on resectability which indicates the ability to surgically remove the participation of the tumor and the lymph nodes.
The grading system is as follows:
stage I: resectable mesothelioma and no lymph node
Stage II: Mesothelioma resectable but with lymph nodes
Stage III: Unresectable Mesothelioma scope of chest wall, heart, or through diaphragm, peritoneum. with or without extrathoracic lymph nodes
Stage IV: Metastatic DiseaseEvery distant year, more than 3,000 people are diagnosed mesothelioma in the United States. This aggressive cancer has a long latency period resulting from the disease with a very low survival rate. The aggressive nature of cancer is caused mainly from exposure to asbestos during their ages of development or the industry in which they were employed. Unfortunately, the chances of survival to disease are relatively low and is generally not many survive beyond five years post diagnosis.Survival rates increased significantly the first of the disease is detected. Another major problem with this cancer is that it is very difficult to detect early symptoms are very common, and people tend to ignore them and causes delayed discovery. Mesothelioma survival rates of patients of mesothelioma beyond 5 years is usually less than 9%, with only about 40% of them can survive more than a year after the diagnosis.
Mesothelioma survival rates depend on various factors such as: despite all these factors, the processing option and medical care given to patients also help determine the rate of survival of the patient. Moreover, but still without a cure for this form of cancer, treatment options also helps in reduction of pain and trauma suffered patients.According to various studies have been conducted on mesothelioma, step 1 mesothelioma patients have a 50 percent chance to live for about 5 years, provided that the treatment is appropriate and aggressive. In step 2 have about 2 to 4 years and those with stage 3 have a survival rate average of 6 to 8 months. Patients with stage 4 and the highest of mesothelioma usually survive less than 6 months.According to the Mayo Clinic, where the mesothelioma is diagnosed at later stages, treatment options are not very effective and are only used to relieve pain and to offer maximum comfort. Pain significantly reduced if the patient is in good health and under 50 years. Survival rate of Cancer mesothelioma in its final stages

Mesothelioma survival rate statistics
Mesothelioma survival rate-A common application for those who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma is "" how long can I live with this disease?". Indeed, many patients are turning to their doctor this question as well as their friends and family members. As with most diseases, however, it is no answer to the life expectancy of a patient meso, but - generally - mesothelioma survival rate is based on a number of different factors. Each case is a little different and if victims of mesothelioma survival rate was always dark, patients more and more people live longer with the disease that scientists discover more ways to detect disease and treat it.
survival rate of patients with mesothelioma depends on many factors which may include part or all of the following:
Mesothelioma survival rate - mesothelioma latency period is an unusual form of cancer in that it has a very long latency period. Essentially, this means that the disease often "cache" in the body for many years, often until four or five decades. Thus, 40-50 years have elapsed since first exposure to asbestos first produced. This prolonged latency period also means that the disease is not detected until symptoms occur. Often, at this time, cancer has spread from the primary zone to other parts of the body.
stage of disease at diagnosis - those whose mesothelioma is found in step 1 or 2 have a much better chance of surviving the disease during a prolonged period of time due to the treatment options will be made available to them. Will those in stage 3 or 4 mesothelioma have fewer treatment options. The prognosis of mesothelioma is most observed in these patients with advanced cancer who have or are symptomatic of the distance of the primary tumour metastases, namely, the cancer has spread from the primary zone to other parts of the body.
operability of the tumor - due to the aforementioned latency period, surgery to remove the primary tumor mesothelioma is often not an option. However, if the disease was discovered at an early stage, surgery to remove the tumor may be a possibility, particularly when the patient is in good health.
the age of the patient - the youngest patient, better are the chances of survival. Studies have shown that age plays indeed a better rate of survival factor and young patients certainly just.
Mesothelioma survival rate-Co-morbidity with other diseases - patients, especially older ones, that have a lot of other medical problems are less likely to survive for a time with mesothelioma. This is especially true with older patients, which has a large number of victims of mesothelioma. Diseases cardiac, kidney problems, diabetes, hypertension, and a host of other diseases or disorders may have an effect options of treatment and, therefore, shorten the life of a patient.
plan for treatment of mesothelioma - the duration of the victim survives mesothelioma may depend on the treatment (s) that it receives. Most physicians will be as aggressive as possible, understand that it is difficult to treat cancer.
area and the type of disease - mesothelioma can take various forms. About 75 per cent of the cases appear in the pleura, 15 to 20 per cent in the peritoneum, and to only 5 per cent in the pericardium. Pleural mesothelioma is easier to treat, and patients generally have a rate more mesothelioma survival than those whose disease is centered elsewhere. In addition, those with epithelial mesothelioma (most of the cases are of this type) have a better prognosis than those with other types of mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma survival rate statistics
Mesothelioma is a cancer whose prognosis is particularly poor, life expectancy varies between eight and fourteen months mesothelioma diagnosis. The main reason is the latency period of long mesothelioma and the fact that the early mesothelioma symptoms are indicative of many other respiratory diseases, which often delays correct diagnosis. Although the step 1 or 2 mesothelioma is often potentially curable, step 3 and step 4 mesothelioma is not; these patients are often relegated to palliative treatments to relieve symptoms and restore the quality of life.
prognosis of mesothelioma is officially determined by a standard measure known as the five-year relative survival rate. This number indicates how many patients are still alive five years after having been diagnost
Mesothelioma survival rate
Mesothelioma survival rate-Persons between the ages of 50 and 70 years are more likely to get the disease because of long latency. However a survey in 2007 carried out that the disease affects more people between the age group of 30 to 40. Based on industry and occupation, the statistics show that people in industries such as construction, rail, port, manufacturing and automotive industry are working, the asbestos be exposed to, with the construction industry with approximately 1.3 million people to be exposed to the asbestos.
Statistics relating to the study of mesothelioma also shows that the life expectancy of people with the disease to year at least one. But with early detection and aggressive mesothelioma treatment the life expectancy of up to two minutes five years ago. Studies show also mesothelioma can disease associate a silent killer like the symptoms with the lies years inactive in the body for very long periods of time in the range of ten to fifty. Symptoms appear likely disease only in the later stages of, this reduces the chances of survival of the patient.Mesothelioma survival rate
Mesothelioma survival rates
The disease is difficult to see than to take signs of the form of a simple stomach upsets or simply lack. As a result, the disease is already at an advanced stage when diagnosed at last. This can they always the best treatment left at this point despite the possible to live with little over a year.
Although Mesothelioma survival rate statistics have shown that it actively for years in the last 100, the average survival rate of patients records comes from just 20 years. The study also found that the time for this kind of diagnosis is cancer within 1-5 years after one. For those, was between 1998 and 2002 diagnosed, the chance of survival for this category is about 9%. Some of the factors affecting mesothelioma survival rate are:
The early detection of the disease the complexity of the disease size of the tumor if the tumor can an operation removes the type of the cancer cells are the amount of fluid in the chest or the abdomen the age and general health of the patient
For pleural and Peritoneal Mesothelioma is the survival rate at one year. However, mesothelioma believe specialists who survive longer derives despite knowledge of clinical trials. According to various medical literature, average survival rate is between the 4 to 18 months. The survival rate for people diagnosed and in the earlier stages of the disease is treated, not very clear and the time frame can vary from person to person.
Mesothelioma research
Comprehensive Mesothelioma survival rate research organizations carried out by many. Various companies with asbestos are also launching their own research. This is because, more and more people diagnosed are looking for compensation with the disease, and has such withdrawal led huge amounts of money. The National Institute of cancer conducting research on the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, as well as the cure and treatment of the disease is also continuous mesothelioma.
Due to the increasing demand for representation of the patient for compensation, many law firms are also own research in order to understand more about the disease. Drug companies, research groups and government organisations with the hope that typically offer research grants of the disease, as well as ways to increase the survival rate in patients for progress towards a cure.
